The “Estudiantina” a traditional Latin folkloric group, that mixes popular and social content, will be touring three cities in Ontario and Quebec during November.
On November 21, Toronto will be hosting The “Estudiantina” from the San Carlos University from Guatemala City. The “Estudiantina” is a musical ensemble formed by university students who perform popular songs accompanied by various instruments, prominently strings, and dressed in traditional University robes. They will headline the event “Floreceras Guatemala” which translates to “Guatemala will bloom” which will take place in one of Toronto’s finest theatrical venues – The St. Michael’s College School Centre for the Arts.

Brought to Toronto by the collective Guatemala Community Network-Toronto with the purpose to unveil the group’s artistic contribution to the struggle of the people of Guatemala, and the country’s effort to create a more just and democratic society. Also, to create a bridge of communication and exchange with various sectors - artistic, cultural, scholastic, trade unions and popular movements in Canada.

It is the first time that “The Estudiantina” will be performing in Canada. This tour also celebrates the 45th Anniversary of the traditional group that has seen many alumni over its history at the San Carlos University.  This event will also support  projects of the following organizations: Region of Waterloo Guatemala Group,  Guatemalan Canadian Association (ASOGUATE) Salvadorean Canadian Association (ASALCA) Teach2Learn and  the Latin American Cultural Centre Casa Maíz.

The Guatemala Community Network-Toronto presents “Floreceras Guatemala” for the first and only presentation in Toronto of The “Estudiantina” of the University of San Carlos of Guatemala on Saturday, November 21, 2015 at 7:30 PM.
