Casa Maíz is proud to present the 2nd annual Agustín Barrios tribute! Learn more about the influential, legendary, and complex figure that was known for his virtuosity on the guitar, as well as his compositional acumen. A personality that was both a product of the Romantic era of classical music, and of the heart and soul of Latin American culture, Barrios drew inspiration from global culture and left us a musical legacy that passes through the generations.
In this year’s offering, Erez Sussman interviews Barrios scholar and archivist Ramsés Calderón. Together they discuss Barrios, from oral history to written records, his personality, influences, the impact he has had, and more. You will also see and hear performances of Barrios’ music. Whether you are a classical guitar enthusiast, or simply love music, history, and culture, we ask you to join us for the hour to learn more about the fascinating maestro that is Agustín Barrios. |

Conoceremos más sobre la figura influyente, legendaria y compleja que era conocida por su virtuosismo con la guitarra, así como por su perspicacia compositiva. Una personalidad que fue producto de la era romántica de la música clásica y del corazón y el alma de la cultura latinoamericana, Barrios se inspiró en la cultura global y nos dejó un legado musical que pasa de generación en generación.
En el tributo de este año, Erez Sussman entrevista al académico y archivista de Barrios: Ramsés Calderón. Juntos charlan de Barrios, desde la historia oral hasta los registros escritos, su personalidad, influencias, el impacto que ha tenido y más. También presentaremos la música de Barrios. Erez Sussman
Erez will be the featured performer for Casa Maiz’ video tribute to Agustín Barrios
Erez is a composer, performer, and recording artist in many styles and has received numerous awards and grants including a National Gold Medal from the Royal Conservatory of Music, The Toronto Guitar Society's President's Award, FACTOR and Ontario Arts Council grants, and a Masters degree in Performance from the University of Toronto. He continues performing live with concerts usually featuring his band replete with upright bass and expanded rhythm section, percussionists, and vocals. Erez continues to record and compose various works for ensemble, solo guitar, and film. He is an artist in several disciplines, as well as being a Certified Arborist (ISA) and a 2nd degree Black Belt (Ronin Kai Karate).

Ramsés Calderón
Ramsés is lending us his extensive knowledge on the subject of Agustín Barrios, as well as narrating our original video project commemorating the life of the artist.
Currently residing Gatineau Quebec, Ramses was born in San Salvador, El Salvador. His music career began at the age of 11, playing the marimba and performing in recitals. He has been living and performing in Canada since 2000.
Having studied in the tradition of Agustin Barrios Mangoré, Ramses incorporates traditional instruments and rhythms into his music and compositions. The result of his creation process is a unique fusion of classical, traditional and popular music that reflects the richness of humanity. His distinguished musical achievements have enabled him to participate in many cultural events in countries including El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Panama, Cuba, Paraguay, Uruguay and Canada. |
Land Acknowledgement
We wish to acknowledge this land on which Casa Maíz operates. For thousands of years it has been the land of many Nations, including the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishnabeg, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee, and the Wendat peoples. Today this meeting place is still home to many Indigenous people from across Turtle Island. This territory is protected by the Dish with One Spoon Wampun Belt Covenant, which requires that those who inhabit the land share it peaceably and care for it.
