sikuris of st. lawrence en casa maíz

The November issue of "Cantos Libres" brings the rich sounds of the South American pan flutes and drums to Casa Maíz with the group "Sikuris of St. Lawrence".  For those of you who may not be familiar with the term, "Siku" means pan flute in Aymara language.  The musician who plays the Siku is the "Sikuri".

This group of musicians was born close to St. Lawrence Market in downtown Toronto in 1983.  This popular spot became the place where they gathered to play their music, exchange ideas and practice their instruments. While basking from 6 AM to 5 PM  every weekend, the Saint Lawrence market musicians became a signature  of Toronto for many years. Musicians like Loreena McKennitt, Celtic  and Folk music lovers, came together with the South American SIKURIS  to play and share the Market as their universal stage.

This November 28, and more than 30 years later, these "Sikuris" are gathering again at Casa Maíz  to share their music and pay  respect to the ancient music of the South American Andes.
