My two artworks "Mujer" and "Monarca de la Vida" (Monarch of Life), done in acrylic, on canvas, aim to highlight women in her pure nature. En esta ocasión estaremos presentando el Tilingo Lingo, La bruja y el zapateado veracruzano. El estado de Veracruz, representa una fuente de tradiciones, creencias y costumbres populares, que han sido transmitidas a través del tiempo por medio de la danza. Son Jarocho, Huapango Fandango es la principal manifestación de la fiesta veracruzana, el origen es una mezcla de aires españoles influenciados por ritmos africanos, el baile estereotipado de los jarochos es el “zapateado” o son jarocho, que se acostumbra en exhibiciones de todo el territorio de Veracruz. En algunos bailes como la Bamba, El Torito, el tilingo Lingo , El querreque, colas La bruja el son cuenta con partes instrumentales taconeos (antecedentes españoles), partes Cantadas paseos, descansos y pasos menos sonoros. Bio: Luz Adriana Castillo Graduated from the National School of Mexican Folk Dance (ENDF-INBA) in Mexico City. She began her dance studies in Ballet at age 7, at the artistic initiation Schools, has some training in contemporary dance and jazz but her major is in Mexican Folklore. Luz was part of the Representative group during her time at the National School and had the opportunity to participate at International Folk Festivals in Majorca Spain, Dijon- France and Sicilia Folk Fest. After graduating, Luz had the invitation to participate as instructor and choreographer at The Mexican Folk Group “Alianza” in Toronto, Canada, (1998- 1999) a year after she was invited also to be the instructor and choreographer of the “Viva Mexico Dance Group”. In 2001 she started her own dance group called “TONATIUH” in honor of one of the last teachers she had in Mexico City, since then she has been dedicated to the promotion and diffusion of Mexican Folklore, the culture and Mexican traditions in Toronto and the GTA. As a mother and dancer her mission is to promote the Mexican Folklore and traditions to the new generations and inspire the kids to feel proud of their roots. |

This discomfort places them in uncomfortable scenarios that sadly push many common day expectations and degrading misconceptions toward women in the workplace. I explore this theme with this piece—the urge to walk away, the need to control your emotions, and the suppression of responses in order to avoid causing a big reaction that leads to the point of no return. --- La Entrevista es una pieza de reflexión sobre la presentación familiar pero trágica de los inconvenientes a los que se exponen las mujeres mientras asisten a entrevistas de trabajo. Esta incomodidad las coloca en escenarios incómodos que lamentablemente empujan muchas expectativas cotidianas comunes y conceptos erróneos degradantes hacia las mujeres en el lugar de trabajo. Exploro este tema con esta pieza: la necesidad de alejarse, la necesidad de controlar sus emociones y la supresión de respuestas para evitar causar una gran reacción que lleve al punto sin retorno. The original intention of this piece titled “Stitched Meditation”’ was that of merely experimenting with media; as the process evolved however, it became a sensorial journey and the means to dive deeper into my identity as a Latin American woman. The whimsical composition of elements on the canvas and the grounding effect each stitch, each threading brought me, seemed to respond to my spontanoeous nature and to what my personal search was at the moment of creating the piece. I found in embroidering, a meditative, centering state that also allowed me to connect with my own manisfestation of womanhood on this Earth and to the one of my lineage. Through the action of emproidering I was threading together bits and pieces of my ancestry as well as keeping alive this feminine voice of my continent. Both pieces exhibited this year (one as part of the Llalín Collective´s piece and this one), have led me into a search and study of various embroidery traditions of Mayan heritage, which is something I will keep on pursuing. The meaningfulness of this piece has to do with the process, the “discoveries” along it and the curiosity it has installed in me, more than with a pre concieved idea. It responds to the artist’s call to explore and to be captivated by serendipity, yet it gives you a roots and a north. Statement: Our sadness is political A series of six ink blots, marked by crime scene markers, direct the viewer toward the print. Each marker contains a fragment of text [1] that exposes the consequences of “the crime” that affects us all. This linograph lies in the foreground; it presents us with a skeleton that can be seen holding the moon in allusion to the archetypal representation of the XVIII and XIII tarot cards. “The moon” is a representation of sadness, fear and anxiety. “The Death” symbolizes a necessary point of profound transformation without return. Although depression and other mental illnesses are more present in my generation than in any other, I believe that the sadness of my generation is political, and a consequence of living in a deeply violent and hierarchical world. I think this sadness is trying to communicate something to us; realizing the injustices of the world is overwhelming, but at the same time the possibilities that arise from recognizing these problems can be a new beginning. We know that extreme inequality in the world is not a matter of poverty but of the concentration of wealth that renders any economic power into a political one. I see my generation questioning everything, inventing their own ways of living and existing in the world; we are breaking all the established paradigms, healing our ancestors, doing birth strikes, transforming language, dreaming and building other realities. In this painting inspired by Mexican and Peruvian opal, Lucia explores the world and story within the stone creating a colour landscape that connects the stone to the land where it came from. Bio: Lucia Rojas is a Colombian born-Toronto based multidisciplinary artist whose practice includes visual arts, film, photography, collage, and sound. For her, moving between different forms and materials is an important part of conceptual exploration of themes. Different questions need different ways to reach answers. Some concepts may require a video installation but others can be explored with just painting or one single photograph. Each concept, idea or theme calls out for the form and media it needs. Lucia listens to this call. Her painting work explores the realm of the imaginary landscape, hallucinatory visions, dreams, and spiritual ancestry through the use of repetition, abstract patterns and colour. Bio: Giselle Navaroli was born and raised in Havana, Cuba, completed the Elementary School of Ballet and has a Degree in Clowning from The National Circus School, A Bachelor in Fine Arts from the University of Cuba. As a lead actress from “Buendia “ Theatre Company, Cuba, she tour from 1995 to Samara, Moscow, Minas Gerais, Brazil at the International Theatre Festival, two times at Ibero –American Theatre Festival in Costa Rica; She performed in England at The Globe Theatre in the summer of 1999. Came to Canada in 2000 to the World Stage Festival and now resides in Toronto since as performer, child advocate and a painter as well. |
